A man was killed Monday afternoon in an avalanche near Winter Park on Berthoud Pass.

Emergency crew responded to the avalanche on the west side of the pass in Grand County about 12:50 p.m. Monday, according to the Grand County Sheriff’s Office.

Four people were caught in the avalanche slide, the sheriff’s office said, and two of them were buried. Bystanders and family members helped rescue one of the buried people, but when the second person, a 44-year-old man, was found, lifesaving measures were unsuccessful and the man died.
