A 24-year-old man drowned Friday off a Queens beach as New York City prepared to ramp up its enforcement of a ban on swimming over the Memorial Day weekend, New York Police Department officials said.
The man was one of three people rescued from the water shortly before 3 p.m. by police officers and Fire Department of New York firefighters, the officials said. The three were in the water together off Rockaway Beach on a stretch popular with surfers, according to the officials.
