Five people, four of them children, were resuscitated Jan. 9, 2023 after fire crews rescued them from an apartment fire on Indianapolis’ east side.
On Jan. 11, the Indianapolis Fire Department announced the 31-year-old man rescued from the fire has died. His identity has not been publicly released. Officials said the children remain in critical, but stable, condition at Riley Hospital for Children.
Firefighters quickly knocked out the remaining flames, within a minute of entry, according to a fire department news release.Crews made a quick initial search and located one man and one infant, both unconscious, near the couch in the apartment. Firefighters then found two more children and a teenager in a back bedroom of the apartment.All five people were in cardiac arrest when they were rescued. The fire department ordered additional medic trucks to transport the victims to hospitals.
"Thank goodness my daughter got off work when she did,” Williams said. “I did hear banging probably from the fire, but I just thought it was people walking hard."
