The man pulled over on the bridge, got out and started climbing at around 1 p.m.
, according to the California Highway Patrol. He climbed all the way up one of the bridge’s suspension towers, 365 feet in the air.
“He’s still at the top of the bridge,” said Officer Edgar Figueroa, a CHP spokesman, more than a couple of hours later. CHP and other agencies were in contact with the man, who had a phone with him. Police units blocked off both sides of the bridge, and police helicopters were trying to keep track of him as the man moved about the top of the bridge tower.The Los Angeles Fire Department also responded to the bridge after a call about a possibly suicidal man after 1 p.m. Sunday, said Nicholas Prange, a department spokesman.
Whether the man was suicidal wasn’t clear, according to fire officials. LAFD sent boats to cut off traffic in the Los Angeles Harbor.
