Angler Rick Konakowitz, who snagged the golden-colored crappie while ice fishing on Clear Lake, told Newsweek it was 'a once-in-a-lifetime fish.'
Catching a golden-colored crappie is an extremely rare occurrence. But Konakowitz, 60, did just that.
Alec Lackmann, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Minnesota Duluth, said catching a golden-colored crappie was very unusual. "They are kind of rare mutations, so you have to have a couple of parents carrying them so they can produce them," Loren Miller, a fish geneticist for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, told KEYC.
