Forensics remain at the scene
Gardai have arrested a man on suspicion of murder after a body with a suspected gunshot wound was found in a burning house in Co Mayo.CastlebarUpon entering, they discovered the body of a man, who has been named locally John Borgan. It's understood he died from a gunshot wound.
The house was sealed off last night for a forensic investigation. Gardai confirmed that a man has been arrested on suspicion of murder. A Garda spokesperson said: "Shortly after 6.30pm, Sunday 5th March 2023, gardai and emergency services responded to reports of a fire at a house on Pheasanthill, Castlebar, Co. Mayo. The body of a man was discovered inside the residence.
"A man has been arrested by gardai on suspicion of murder. He is currently detained in Castlebar Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984. The scene is currently preserved and the services of the Garda Technical Bureau, and Office of the State Pathologist are being requested. "Gardai in Castlebar are appealing to any person who may have information in relation to this incident to contact them at Castlebar Garda Station on 094 903 8200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station. Investigations are ongoing. An Garda Síochána has no further comment at this time."
