A convicted sex offender who along with his best friend carried out the serial killings of four women nearly a decade ago pleaded guilty on Thursday, Dec. 15, to kidnapping, raping, and murdering the victims and was immediately sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Cano’s plea came days after prosecutors told the defense that he would no longer face the death penalty. Martha Anaya, 28, of Santa Ana is one of four women suspected of being killed by Franc Cano and Steven Dean Gordon. Cano awaits trial. Gordon has been convicted of murder. On Thursday in court, one after another, eight family members of the victims, spoke. Cano sat just steps away — staring straight ahead, showing no emotion.
“But what does that leave for my family?” she asked, her voice rising. “Nothing, absolutely nothing.”“At that time when I can wrap my arms around my granddaughter and hug her again,” she said. “Then, I will have closure.” Spitzer said he reached out to the family of the victims to explain the decision before it was made public, and added that while not all initially agreed, they understood.Gordon, once Cano’s best friend, served as his own attorney. He described how he and Cano picked up the women in Santa Ana and Anaheim and forcibly took them back to have sex with them in an RV in an Anaheim business park where Gordon worked. The men slept in a nearby, threadbare Toyota 4Runner.
