A magnitude-6.4 earthquake struck southwest of Eureka, California, early Tuesday, according to the U.S. Geological Society. The earthquake struck about 5:34 a.m. EST Tuesday, or 2:34 a.m. PST. The epicenter was about 7.5 miles west-southwest of Ferndale, California, which is about 218 miles northwest of San Francisco. The USGS has recorded more than two dozen aftershocks, including a magnitude 4.6 and a 3.9.The California Highway Patrol reports the Fernbridge, a 1,320-foot-long concrete arch bridge that crosses the Eel River, has cracks in four places. The bridge has been closed to traffic.
