“This is simply incredible. Against all odds, we fought hard to win this election and provide clear conservative leadership for the mountains,” Mr. Edwards said in a statement late Tuesday. He had name recognition, spent hundreds of thousands of dollars of his own money and had the backing of the state’s Republican establishment, including Sen. Thom Tillis, and many prominent state lawmakers.
