From jonmccarthySUN: Mackenzie Hughes bringing a new approach with a ton of new gear to this week's PGAChampionship at Oak Hill.
For Hughes, it would seem like bad luck to be forced to change drivers since it’s the area of his game where he has seen the biggest growth since ramping up his swing with frequent speed sessions on the driving range. Rather than using any special training aids, Hughes often can be seen drawing the occasional odd glances from competitors as he swings for the fences in the tournament practice area. And now he’s even taking the big rips to the course.
“Last week, in Dallas I committed a little more to swinging it, not exactly like I do in my speed sessions, but a little closer to that,” Hughes said. “I track my speeds on ShotLink and I averaged over 177 ball speed. I averaged 170 last year, so 177 for the week is pretty big. That was awesome to see.”Article content
Hughes definitely saw plenty to like last week. For a player known as a short game wizard, the 32-year-old Canadian gained more than two shots against the field off the tee according to strokes gained stats and finished T14 at the AT&T Byron Nelson. Expect to see him on leaderboards even more if he keeps anything close to those driving numbers up.“It’s not a ball you can find in the pro shop,” Hughes said.
Hughes was looking for a higher spinning ball and figured since he was changing drivers, the time was right.Article content
