The 24-county Central Caucus of the Republican State Committee met on Saturday to hear from the crowded fields of candidates vying for governor, U.S. Senate and lieutenant governor and took a non-binding straw poll to show who is winning their favor.

Pennsylvania's 2022 gubernatorial race draws a crowded field of candidates hoping to win the GOP nomination. Among them are William McSwain of Chester County; Charlie Gerow of Cumberland County; Dave White of Delaware County; Jason Richey of Allegheny County; Melissa Hart of Allegheny County; and Doug Mastriano of Franklin County. Guy Ciarrocchi of Chester County; Jake Corman of Centre County, John Ventre of Westmoreland County, Dr.

“It’s a point of interest,” said Stewart of Cumberland County. “It just gives candidates an idea of the way people are thinking.” It was even less popular when it came to an endorsement in the governor’s race with 34 voting yes and 72 no. As for endorsing in the lieutenant governor’s race, 40 said yes and 66 no.

Ventre was unsatisfied with the meeting’s structure and response he received. He issued a statement after the meeting, saying he felt the committee members only wanted to hear from “the 5 elected officials and not the 9 political outsiders in the race.” As such, Ventre said he will not be participating in “the 5 remaining caucus game shows.”

Shapiro, without any announced primary opponent, is building up his campaign coffers to fund his general election run and courting endorsements. On Wednesday, he received the lucrative endorsement of the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO, which represents over 700,000 workers from all 67 counties. Barletta planned to trumpet his experience and said he is the only candidate with statewide name recognition. Ciarrocchi said he wants to convey how he has a plan that will give voters hope at a time when they are feeling anxious about the economy and their children’s future.

Richey said he intended to paint himself as “a political outsider along the lines of [former President Donald] Trump and [Virginia Gov. Glenn] Youngkin to disrupt Harrisburg and lead Pennsylvania to economic prosperity so that our kids and grandkids stay right here in Pennsylvania.”
