Loyola Academy’s request to install powerful outdoor lights by its football field is headed to Wilmette’s Zoning Board of Appeals igniting a feud between residents who says “lights out” and others who say let there be light.

The Zoning Board of Appeals is schedule to meet at 7 p.m. on Oct. 11 at the Wilmette Village Hall to continue public hearings on Loyola’s request to install lighting to illuminate their football field at night. The school also wants to install a Jumbo Tron. If the proposal makes it out of the Zoning Board, it is expected to go to the Village Board for a final vote later this year.

“The idea of adding 80 foot lights and a Jumbotron as well as increasing the number of games and people entering our neighborhood would be extremely detrimental to the health and well being of our community,” she said. “The noise and traffic is already an issue. The parking on game weekends is a huge issue. The trash that people leave on our lawns is an issue. Adding more lights, more noise, more people will only exacerbate an already tedious situation.

But resident Bridget Snyders said three of her children attend the school and adding the lights and Jumbo Tron will enhance the high school experience for students. “There is a group of residents who oppose anything Loyola wants to do, but are happy to pave large parts of their property and charge Loyola students exorbitant amounts of money to park there,” he said. “I know the vast amount of Wilmette residents are not anti-Catholic or anti-Loyola Academy and am confident that will come out.”
