As a close confidant of Warren Buffet, he was the Chicago-based manager of insurer Geico’s investment portfolio for 17 years and a noted philanthropist.

Louis A. Simpson was the Chicago-based manager of insurer Geico’s investment portfolio for 17 years and a noted philanthropist whose $92 million gift in 2015 funded a new biomedical research center at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine.

Born in Chicago, Simpson grew up in Highland Park and graduated from Highland Park High School. He attended Northwestern University for a year before transferring in 1955 to Ohio Wesleyan University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in economics and accounting in 1958. Simpson went on to get a master’s degree in economics from Princeton University in 1960, and he stayed at Princeton to teach for the next two years.

“ presence on the scene assures us that Berkshire would have an extraordinary professional immediately able to handle its investments if something were to happen to Charlie and me,” Buffett wrote. Simpson was working in southern California when he met his second wife, Kimberly Querrey, at a restaurant while in Chicago on business. She persuaded him to make Chicago his professional base after the couple married in 2000.
