ICYMI: Peel Police recover $10M of stolen vehicles, but thieves keep evolving — via drivingdotca

Canada is seen as a rich source of stolen vehicles, according to Bryan Gast, Vice-President of Investigations with Equite Association. Equite was one of the partners working on Project R&R with local police, along with the RCMP, Canada Border Services Agency, the Port of Montreal, Interpol, and liaison officers around the globe, according to Gast. “Canada has been a bit of free-for-all, but this is a very strong statement that active law enforcement agencies have taken a big step.

You don’t have to look far to find video clips of men in hoodies boosting a car in a residential driveway and making off with it in a few minutes. From there, it’s been a fast trek into the back of a semi or an offsite location, then into a shipping container leaving the Port of Montreal destined for a multitude of other countries. These arrests offer evidence that the Federal government is getting serious about tightening up this gaping weakness in the chain.

Gast wouldn’t tell me if law enforcement was tracking the vehicles or those who stole them, but the breadth of the recovered vehicles in a multitude of places indicates this might be one of the times when the cops were ahead of the robbers.Over 25 containers were intercepted and held at various locations and ports including Brampton, Montreal, Germany, and Spain. Many stolen vehicles were destined for the United Arab Emirates,”Peel police.

I asked if the United Arab Emirates, where many of the vehicles from this arrest were headed, doesn’t have laws surrounding buying and licencing of vehicles. “Many are sold to unwitting buyers, much they are here at home,” says Gast. They probably weren’t destined for manufacturers’ dealer lots, but rather, the UAE version of curbsiders.

Police laid 34 charges on four people, and indicate that more are forthcoming. Among the charges are theft of motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime, fraud under $5,000, and possession for the purpose of trafficking.
