A drawn-out process of deciding the city’s top political race saw just under 13,000 new ballots counted in the latest results, bringing the total to 84,510 — somewhere close to two-thirds of the overall vote. Results that more definitively reflect the outcome of this hotly contested race could still be days away. And given the current pace of vote-counting — about 8,000 to 15,000 ballots per day — it is possible that a winner may not be fully determined until next week.
Taylor bills himself as someone who can find rational, moderate solutions to Oakland’s problems, whereas Thao has more often taken a progressive lane in her advocacy and earned widespread support from labor unions., once aligning with the view that law enforcement already have enough money before pushing more aggressively for police funding in the past year as their mayoral campaigns got off the ground.
