Clairmont captures D-IV girls championship with a 2-1 overtime victory over High Tech High San Diego

With the wind at their backs, the La Jolla Country Day Torreys sailed again into championship seas Friday night.

“We brought in a lot of key players this season,” said senior forward Colin Guckian, who led the Torreys’ charge with a hat trick which commenced in the first minute of the second half. “We had a pretty terrible season last year. This feels a lot better.” Less than a minute into the half, Guckian fired a salvo from the left side from 20 yards out that Morse goalie Carlos Renteria got a piece of but could not secure. Eight minutes later, it was Ward with a header which elevated La Jolla Country Day’s lead to 2-0, and when Carter Feinman sent a perfect cross to the front of the goal, Guckian was there for a point-blank conversion and a 3-0 Torreys advantage with just 18 minutes elapsed in the half.

Ward, who sat out last season to play club soccer but returned for his senior year, added an assist when his free kick found senior co-captain Axel Nyman for a header and a 4-0 lead. It was Nyman who had the match-winning goal in the semis as the Torreys erased a two-goal deficit in the final 15 minutes for a 3-2 win over No. 5 seed Pacific Ridge. La Jolla Country Day also survived a 5-4 quarterfinal shootout against No. 8 seed Mission Bay after a scoreless stalemate in regulation play.

“Our guys wanted this matchup ever since we lost to them earlier,” said Morse coach Andres Vargas said, referring to a 4-2 loss to the Torreys in December.Clairemont 2, High Tech High SD 1
