Born Melissa Viviane Jefferson in Detroit, Lizzo has been making music since her teenage years but was propelled into the mainstream with her third studio album this year. In addition to racking in honors, the singer toured with her album this summer, with one notable moment of being cheered on by“I’ve always stood up for the underdog and the underrepresented because I can’t escape from that myself,” Lizzo toldin a 2018 interview. “I can’t wake up one day and not be Black.
Lizzo is also nominated for three American Music Award nominations, which airs this Sunday, November 24.
