Liz Cheney has become the Republicans’ most vocal critic of Donald Trump, a stance that has got her voted out of leadership by the House Republican Caucus and formally expelled by her party in Wyoming. What caused this shift—and what impact will it have?

When I spoke with some of Cheney’s select-committee colleagues, they credited her with deflating conservative efforts to denounce the hearings as a partisan exercise.

Cheney is likely to lose her seat in the midterm elections. The most recent poll of Wyoming’s Republican primary, which is scheduled for August 16th, shows her trailing her well-funded, Trump-backed opponent, Harriet Hageman, by twenty points. Some of the immensely wealthy and conservative Jackson Hole families that have long backed the Cheneys have switched their allegiance to Hageman. More recently, in Congress, Cheney has taken votes—for affirming a federal right to same-sex marriage, for a broad gun-control measure—that staked out positions she’d never explored before. The gun-control vote, Cheney’s longtime friend Bill Kristol pointed out to me, looked suspiciously like a white flag was being waved. “That can’t be popular in Wyoming in Republican circles,” Kristol said. “That tells me that she’s not adjusting her votes to the election.
