Wisconsin’s new coronavirus cases climb shortly after court overturns stay-at-home order
MADRID — The Spanish government said Friday all of Spain would progress to Phase 1 of relaxing the nationwide lockdown starting May 18, with the exception of the metropolitan areas of Madrid and Barcelona, as well as parts of the Castilla Leon region, which will all remain in Phase 0.
Fernando Simon, who heads Spain’s Coordinated Health Response, cited “prudence” in refusing to let the cities move to Phase 1, saying that Barcelona still had a lot of fresh infections and Madrid had to switch its health-care focus to early diagnosis, referring to the lack of test kits and undetected cases.
Rick Bright, a former top federal medical researcher, will return to work next week, more than a month since being removed as director of the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority. But it’s unclear exactly what his job will be.Thursday the role is “second-in-command of the Accelerating Covid-19 Therapeutic Interventions and Vaccines” at the National Institutes of Health.
“That’s where he should be given his experience,” Katz added. “To have him sidelined during this pandemic is a tragic waste of his expertise. ”President Trump formally announced Friday that he has tapped the former head of vaccines at GlaxoSmithKline and an Army four-star general to run a White House-led drive to try to swiftly develop and manufacture a vaccine for the novel coronavirus.
At the end of April, the White House announced the Warp Speed initiative, combining the work of government agencies, private companies and the military, with the goal of having hundreds of millions of doses of a vaccine effective against the coronavirus by January — a time frame many experts have said is overly ambitious.
Trump also suggested Friday that the coronavirus could be eradicated without a vaccine, an idea that he has pushed for months even as health experts emphasize the need to develop one.
