Boris Johnson has told the Privileges Committee “hand on heart I did not lie to the House” - latest
Former prime minister Boris Johnson is giving evidence to the Privileges select committee this afternoon after admitting that he misled Parliament when he said all guidance was followed in Downing Street during the pandemic.
The committee has been tasked with deciding whether or not Mr Johnson deliberately lied to Parliament when he denied that rules had been broken in No 10 after reports emerged that lockdown-busting parties had been held while coronavirus restrictions were in place. Mr Johnson has admitted that Parliament was misled by his statements after investigations by Sue Gray and the Met Police found evidence of the rules not being followed. However, the former prime minister denies lying deliberately and says he "honestly and reasonably believed" that he was telling the truth at the time.Today, Mr Johnson will face a grilling from MPs on the committee when he delivers his oral evidence.
The evidence suggests that Mr Johnson was warned against claiming that all coronavirus guidance had been followed at No 10 when the partygate scandal was first reported by the Mirror at the end of November 2021 - but went ahead and issued a denial the following day anyway. The committee has said that the evidence they have been presented with "strongly suggests that breaches of guidance would have been obvious to Mr Johnson at the time he was at the gatherings.” But Mr Johnson has argued that this position is "fundamentally flawed". In his written evidence, he said the allegation was “illogical”, arguing that some of those who attended the events “wished me ill and would denounce me if I concealed the truth”.
