Thousands of utility customers are in the dark as a later-winter snowstorm hits the state.

As of 3:40 p.m. Saturday, the state’s major utility companies reported more than 7,300 outages, scattered across several counties — with the highest numbers in Essex, Hunterdon and Morris.cautioned that isolated to scattered tree and utility damage was possible. The strongest winds are expected from Saturday evening through Sunday morning.
Although there are a few more snow bands moving across the state, the heaviest snow fell in the morning and early afternoon, with some areas of Sussex and Warren counties picking up 3 to 5 inches and parts of Hunterdon and Morris getting 2 to 3 inches, according to preliminary snowfall totals reported by the National Weather Service.
