Seymour and Audrey find themselves entangled in “Little Shop of Horror,” running Aug. 30-Oct. 15 at Paramount Theatre in Aurora.
Fleming isn’t new to the Paramount. She previously starred as Lucinda in “Into the Woods” and Penny in “Hairspray” and most recently codirected “Fun Home.”“Little Shop of Horrors” is about a sad sack named Seymour Krelborn, toiling away at the failing Mushnik’s Flower Shop down on Skid Row. He’s in love with his co-worker Audrey, who’s dating an evil dentist. He’s also raising a Venus flytrap-like plant that feeds on human flesh and blood named Audrey II.
“Even though we are looking at this from a 1960s perspective, we get the feel this could happen at any time,” Fleming said. From left: Jack Ball plays Seymour, Teressa LaGamba stars as Audrey and Russell Mernagh plays Orin in Paramount Theatre’s 12th Broadway Series opener, “Little Shop of Horrors.” Performances are Aug. 30-Oct. 15.
“That’s been a really fun process,” she said. “We need to make sure she’s just as much of a character as every other person in the show. She’s the face of it all.”Her cast was mostly familiar with the play — in fact, Gene Weygandt, her Mr. Mushnik, played Seymour before in a previous production. “It’s so wrought with so many elements and things to think about. There’s so much comedy and so many complex issues and things to think about, so that’s been really interesting,” he said.
Fleming and her cast are exploring the idea of who the real villain of the story is and she hopes that audiences ponder that as well as their potential for good or evil, she said.
