Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo on Thursday lowered the county's COVID threat level to yellow, signaling a controlled level of cases following the decline of the omicron wave.

Under the yellow or moderate level, unvaccinated residents are encouraged to continue masking and social distancing, while vaccinated residents are encouraged to do the same where required by law.

“My hope is that we are at a permanent turning point of this pandemic,” Hidalgo said in a statement. “But we’ve yet to have a wave where our hospitals don’t get overwhelmed, so we need to tread with caution before we declare victory over this virus.” The update is the second time in two weeks that Hidalgo has lowered the COVID threat level. On Feb. 24, thethe second-highest possible threat level. That decrease in threat prompted Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner to scrap mask requirements and temperature checks for most municipal employees.

Harris County’s threat level is calibrated using several metrics, including the 14-day trend of new cases and COVID hospitalizations. Both have been declining since the highly contagious omicron variant peaked in January. It has met all four as of Wednesday, according to ReadyHarris.org.
