Lin-Manuel Miranda has teased the possibility of an Encanto Broadway musical, saying he even has an idea for how the final song could play out on stage.👏🙌 'I think it weirdly lends itself well.'
Lin-Manuel Miranda has discussed the possibility of Disney's newest animated hit Encanto going to Broadway. Encanto tells the Columbian-set musical tale of a young girl, Mirabel Madrigal, who has to face life as the only member of her family without magical powers. The film has been quickly rising in popularity since its release in November of 2021, gaining plenty of attention for its viral original songs, such as"We Don't Talk About Bruno.
A huge amount of Encanto's popularity has come from its success on TikTok. Since its release, many of Encanto's songs, such as"We Don't Talk About Bruno,""Surface Pressure" and"The Family Madrigal," have been used in countless different viral clips. This has lead to the popularity of the Encanto soundtrack nearly transcending the film itself, becoming its own phenomenon.
"I think it weirdly lends itself well. They don't always, you know? Like, I can't picture a Moana Broadway musical. I don't know how you'd do the ocean. My first draft of the last song in the movie, 'All of You,' was like seven minutes long. It was so late in production that they were like, 'Lin, we won't make the movie in time. You actually have to cut this down.' So I've got the Broadway finale like in the chamber.
Plans for a potential Broadway adaptation is not the only thing Miranda has in mind for Encanto's future, however. The director and musician admitted that he has also not ruled out the idea of an Encanto TV series, or perhaps an Encanto 2 movie sequel. Miranda went on to say that "there's so many stories to tell in that house," referring to the Madrigal family's"Casita," and said it would be"wonderful to expand on it.
While no official plans have been made for an Encanto Broadway show as of yet, it is not hard to imagine the Disney film translated on the stage. Its large ensemble cast of whacky characters, stunning setting of Columbia, plus its viral soundtrack, all lend themselves well to a live musical adaptation. Of course, before then, the film has the 2022 Oscars on the horizon, for which Encanto is nominated for three awards, including Best Animated Feature.
