Having Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, or at least his minister, get personally involved in the talks could help negotiations move forward.

“We’re hearing from members across the country who are worried about missing critical sales, delayed production or orders or an inability to get their products to export markets because of the strike,” Dan Kelly, president of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, said Tuesday..The business lobby group noted examples such as a specialty beverage producer in B.C.

“I had one company call up and they have three containers of pork sitting there,” Ford said, noting the $700,000 cost of the product is a significant sum for a smaller firm.Ford said he wants the federal government to help end the strike, while Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said if the strike was at the Port of Montreal, it would be over already.

Fertilizer giant Nutrien announced Tuesday they were scaling back production at the Cory potash mine in Saskatchewan and said other mines may face the same fate if the strike drags on. In a statement, the company also cited the strike and their inability to export as one reason they would be lowering earnings expectations for the year.Article content
