The statement from his office also detailed Oliphant’s long record of support for the Iranian-Canadian community, but didn’t address questions about his choice words. It looks like Oliphant’s support for the Iranian-Canadian community is contingent on there being no criticism of the Trudeau government. Oliphant may not have liked what he was hearing, but in political life, hearing criticism is just part of the job.
So on Wednesday, when Conservative MP Melissa Lantsman asked Oliphant to apologize in the House of Commons, he didn’t. “More than 15,000 gathered in Toronto last Saturday to support a free Iran. Families of the victims of PS 752 were there, survivors of the regime were there, people with loved ones suffering in Iran were there,” Lantsman said. “But the member from Don Valley West stormed out in the middle of a speech by a world renowned women’s rights advocate, muttering something that I can’t repeat in this House.
