Olivia Chow was trailing much of the night to Ana Bailoa before turning things around late in the game.

A couple of things are clear, Bailao was the beneficiary of the “anybody but Chow” movement. Mark Saunders dropped down to third place with about 9% of the vote, Anthony Furey was at 5% of the vote and everyone else was well behind them. From our newsroom to your inbox at noon, the latest headlines, stories, opinion and photos from the Toronto Sun.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.

Chow was expected to be 15 to 20 percentage points ahead of her closest competitor according to most polls over the last several months. Perhaps it was John Tory’s late in the game endorsement, perhaps it was a grass-roots movement of voters swinging behind Bailao. Whatever the case, it became a two-horse race in the end with two immigrant women vying to be mayor of Toronto. Chow coming to Canada from Hong Kong at 13, Bailao from Portugal at 15, both of them carving out successful careers in politics.
