A new Lightyear fan edit imagines the film ToyStory's Andy would have actually seen in the '90s: a solo movie starring Brendan Fraser as Buzz.
A new fan edit imagines what a live-action Lightyear movie with Brendan Fraser could have looked like if the film came out in the '90s. Fraser started his acting career in 1991 and quickly became one of the decade's biggest stars. Movies like The Mummy and George of the Jungle made Fraser a beloved household name, and he continued acting consistently up until 2008.
Pixar was founded in 1986 but gained worldwide attention when Toy Story came out in 1995. After Toy Story 4 was released in 2019, the franchise was thought to be over since Woody and Bo Peep had ventured off without Buzz and Bonnie's other toys. However, Lightyear was announced in 2020, marking Toy Story's first spinoff and the first film to feature Buzz without Tim Allen.
Toy Story has been an incredibly profitable franchise for Disney over the years, so it didn't come as a huge surprise when they announced a spinoff was in the works. However, it's unknown where the franchise will go from here. Lightyear 2 was clearly set up by the first film, yet with Lightyear underperforming at the box office and getting mixed reviews, it's hard to say whether Disney will try again with a sequel.
One thing is almost certain though; Disney won't try to make a live-action Toy Story movie. Recasting Allen was already controversial enough, and given that all of the main characters are toys in Toy Story, the live-action treatment just wouldn't work. However, it is interesting to imagine Disney acquiring Pixar in 1995 and turning the studio's ideas for Buzz Lightyear into a live-action film.
