Licking County districts address impact on student safety after teen charged for alleged online threats. Heath, Lakewood and Newark City Schools are all back in session this week after the Licking County Sheriff's office said threats were made targeting all three districts.
"There was a lot of communication with law enforcement that happened during the weekend so we could understand exactly what happened and if there was or was not a threat," Thomas said. "Then it focusing on making sure the building was safe and trying to make sure we were ready to answer any type of of questions we would get from students."
"These types of threats are particularly unsettling," Psychiatrist at OhioHealth Dr. Megan Schabbing said. "It really creates instability and unpredictability where a student does not know if they are going to show up at school and have someone around them who is posing a threat." Misner and Thomas said the incident should put an emphasis on the importance of ensuring districts have the funding they need to make sure students are safe.
"Security is always a challenge," Thomas said. "We are always working to improve our security and safety measures. and that is something that is ongoing. But we have had a great relationship with Heath Police. Their response time to our buildings is 2-4 minutes. They have always been very transparent with us and willing to work with us."
"There isn't necessarily a specific impact that a threat might have, but we do make budget decisions related to safety frequently. Threats of any kind can be disruptive to school days and overall student learning, but there isn't a direct financial impact tied to a threat like this."
