Ontario Liberal Karen McCrimmon celebrates with supporters as she learns that she won the byelection in Kanata Carleton.
If by-elections are an opportunity for voters to send a message to the current government, then two were sent to Ontario Premier Doug Ford Thursday night when Kanata—Carleton and Scarborough—Guildwood both elected Liberal MPPs. Andrea Hazell will take former education minister Mitzie Hunter’s seat in Scarborough—Guildwood, beating PC candidate Gary Crawford by 1,078 votes but the big story was in suburban Ottawa, whee Liberal candidate Karen McCrimmon will replace former Progressive Conservative cabinet minister Merrilee Fullerton and become Kanata—Carleton’s first Liberal representative.
McCrimmon, who represented the riding federally from 2015 to 2021, took down former Canopy Growth executive and PC candidate Sean Webster by 651 votes.
