A recent survey revealed that renters apart of the LGBTQ+ community are more likely to face financial barriers in relation to homeownership when compared to their non-LGBTQ+ renter counterparts.
Many financial barriers were listed as part of the survey. It was found that for nearly all of the barriers LGBTQ+ respondents were more likely than non LGBTQ+ respondents to list their obstacles.“Which of the following do you agree are reasons you are not likely to purchase a home in the near future?” Redfin asked in a survey.
“Young people are often rewarded financially for fulfilling heteronormative expectations around getting married and having kids,” said Redfin Chief Economist Daryl Fairweather. For example, 29.1% of recent LGBTQ+ homebuyers were found more likely to say they worked a second job when compared to 18.3% of non-LGBTQ+ buyers who’d say the same. Recent LGBTQ+ homebuyers were also more likely to save directly from paychecks with 46.6% saying so and 36.5% of non-LGBTQ+ buyers saying the same. The next survey question focused on protections that a homeowner would consider a “must” when considering where to move.
