WOLED isn’t supposed to be like this

It also turned out that it was doing this in its most accurate Cinema picture preset; a preset that typically looks somewhat flat compared with more showy, daylight room-oriented settings like Standard or Dynamic. The other screens were also set to their Cinema or equivalent modes for this first impression moment.

In fact, for the most part both of these HDR issues are actually handled better than they were on the G2 thanks to the new model’s much higher native panel-level brightness and, perhaps, it’s improved dynamic tone mapping capabilities. The thinking in my obviously pea-sized brain has long been that because WOLED TVs depend on a white element to deliver their brightness, they would struggle to hold on to their color saturations and intensity in the brightest areas, as at this point the influence of the white will start to have more and more dominance.

I can’t say for sure how much of this extra color performance over the G2 is down to the panel and how much is down to LG’s latest Alpha 9 picture processor, but the difference it makes to the picture performance is profound. It’s worth adding, too, that the nature of the G3’s improvements merely underline the reputation of LG’s OLED TVs as great gaming displays, with all that extra brightness and color saturation playing beautifully with today’s increasingly gorgeous 4K, HDR game graphics.
