Readers comment on selling TikTok; question Ken Paxton’s actions; don’t have sympathy for Glenn Rogers; recommend spending the Texas surplus on the homeless; and criticize Jerry Jones.
Re: “TikTok ban bill is about security — Opponents trying to turn this into a free-speech fight are wrong,” Friday editorial.Your editorial support for HR 7521 is misguided. One presumes the national security threat is real given the hurried bipartisan vote in an otherwise dysfunctional House of Representatives . However, national security does not outweigh First Amendment freedoms like some trump card, and the editorial argument that “ will only have to find a new home” is naïve at best.
Further, history has already repeatedly disproved the presumption that a non-foreign advisory would be a trustworthy steward of data. What’s needed are real protections against data misuse. That is a Gordian Knot requiring considerable thought by talented people drawn from multiple perspectives. The Senate should not strap on national security blinders as the editorial espoused.
