Readers praise the Dallas Bar for its mock trial program; appreciate those who work at the American Airlines Center; and give a shout-out to Tom Keener, who handles programs at the Allen Public Library.
Creekview High School’s Ali Aldabaja rubs his eyes before the third round of trials at the 35th annual Texas High School Mock Trial Competition. His school came out the champ again at the event, which brought together 24 high school teams from across the state.— One effective way to keep free speech alive in Texas is to encourage high school students to actively participate in the statewide high school mock trial program organized and supported by the Dallas Bar Association.
With hands-on participation as attorneys, parties and witnesses in a mock trial in real courtrooms, they also learn something about what a trial in court is like. They grow up as citizens who can speak for themselves in public and who understand how the rule of law works. This is vital for preserving and maintaining a free society.
The Accipiter War program on a book series about a quirky space drama in which an entire Texas town was pulled from Earth and placed in a cylinder in outer space, written and produced by Patrick and Blake Seaman, was fresh, fun and free! Starting July 31, the library will be closed for about a year for renovations. We hope Keener will be able to continue these popular programs, perhaps at the local school auditorium where the temporary library will be housed.
