Re: “Ban on Short-Term Rentals is Not Helpful — Some residents are rightly frustrated, but better regulation is needed, not a blanket prohibition,” Thursday editorial.

Short-term rentals are a commercial, for-profit business that perform a lodging use. Our zoning laws expressly prohibit lodging uses from residential zones. The zoning ordinance will make this crystal clear in our Development Code and it will fare well in Texas courts. You want to have income from short-term rentals, go own property in a nonresidential area, go buy stock in a hotel or a hotel REIT.

Texas has benefited from exceptional growth and vibrant economies across the entire state. One critical infrastructure that the entire country is falling short on is the supply of fresh water. Texas lawmakers need to consider using a large portion of the state surplus for investment in the infrastructure of clean water if our economic viability is going to be maintained. Will they listen? You constantly hear about the high price of rental housing.
