Letters to the Editor, Sept. 30, 2023
Bobbi WilsonIt is certainly appalling how the Youth Criminal Justice Act works in both the punishment and protection of youths, but in most cases, it is often seen that the latter is more prioritized. On many accounts the system can be recognized for being too soft on the offenders and lacking clear ideology towards youth justice. Unfair sentencing, not properly addressing violent offences and not recognizing the victims are all results of this practice.
By not thoroughly punishing these children, the justice system can be seen as lax, not paying severe attention to crimes such as assault and murder. Children should be held more accountable and reprimanded for the things they’ve done, encouraging them to learn and manage their feelings, actions and thoughts before acting once again.
