Re: “What the real-world data says about school vouchers ― Such programs nationwide mostly don’t deliver what they promise,” by Josh Cowen, Feb. 26 Opinion.

Should private schools retain such curriculum flexibility, would they also be protected from any book bans proposed by the state? It might be that many parents would choose private school because they would not be bound by the limits imposed by the state on public schools. If vouchers are to be made available anywhere, they should be offered first to families condemned to those failing schools.President Barack Obama famously promised, “You can keep your doctor,” under the Affordable Care Act. This wasn’t true because a doctor’s office is a privately owned business — the business, not the patient, gets to choose who stays and who goes.

It is argued that vouchers will help poor people get better educations. If this is the logic for vouchers, why should rich people get vouchers? Rich people who want to send their children to private schools are already doing so. To give these parents vouchers is a waste of tax dollars.
