Readers offer their opinions on Saskatoon city council\u0027s efforts to reduce property tax increases and delaying the downtown arena district.
says the abandonment of that enormous project would be “short-sighted.” Well, that can be said. But sometimes, if you can’t afford something, you simply can’t afford something. Besides, is SaskTel Centre really so far beyond its best-before date? I don’t think so.
And with a new arena, would SaskTel Centre be mothballed? No new entertainment centre may mean no big-name concerts. But that would not be a tragedy. In these inflationary times, extortionate tax hikes — and cuts to services — are unacceptable. Our councillors simply must tighten the belt to, as Lady Macbeth puts it, “the sticking point.” They must limit a tax hike to as near zero as possible.I think the downtown arena and entertainment districtuntil after the next civic election. I think this existing city council should have to run and try and keep their jobs as councillors.
I know they have said it won’t cost the taxpayers, and the arena itself may not, but what about all the infrastructure that goes along with it? And the new bus system. Who is going to pay for that? This council is always referring to what Edmonton has done with its entertainment district and how good it is. We don’t have the tax base and we don’t have an anchor like an NHL team. So my thoughts are to delay everything until after a civic election.
