East Bay Times Letters to the Editor for Aug. 24, 2022

The writer seems out of touch with reality. She quotes a four-year-old 2018 Gallup Poll indicating only 5% of Americans are vegetarians. This percentage is growing rapidly every year.

She also doesn’t realize that the majority of meat purchased by consumers today comes from factory farms. Most hamburger comes from spentwho can no longer produce milk. There is no “roping and riding, bronco busting” or wild-cow milking going on, or necessity for bucking straps at factory farms. And if her point is to preserve rancher’s skills of the past, there was never any wild-cow milking or need for bucking straps included in ranching chores.Kathy Gleason,” Page A12, Aug.

As the old saying goes and as Dan Walters rightly noted in a recent column, the more you tax something the less of it you get. For California, that means fewer of the high-income earners who contribute the bulk of the state’s discretionary revenue. Some are leaving, spurred in no small part by California’s. And it’ll only get worse with Proposition 30, a disastrous measure on the November ballot that would push taxes on the wealthy even higher.

Ride-hailing company Lyft is advancing Proposition 30 in a cynical, self-serving campaign that won’t benefit Californians and will only hurt our competitiveness. With a record budget, big surplus and massive reserves, California doesn’t need higher taxes. What we need are solutions to problems like housing, homelessness and crime that are shrinking our population, hurting lower-income and vulnerable populations, and diminishing economic opportunity. Voters should reject Proposition 30.

According to a Brookings Institution study, the 2021 changes to the CTC had a profound impact. Child poverty dropped by 40%. CTC recipients lived healthier lives, invested more in their children’s education, and were less likely to rely on payday loans. Families spent their CTC payments on rent, food and clothes for their kids — the same costs going up for us all.
