Calgary Sun Letters to the Editor, October 7, 2023: \u0027New referee in House of Commons\u0027
Canada now has a new Speaker of the House of Commons. Just-elected Quebec Liberal MP Greg Fergus used a quintessential Canadian analogy to describe the duties of his new job. He accurately stated that the Speaker should be independent, impartial and non-partisan, just like a hockey referee. Sounds good. Unfortunately, this newest ‘referee’, like many of his Liberal colleagues, has also been found in violation of the Conflict of Interest Act by the ethics commissioner.

WTO halves 2023 goods trade growth forecastThe World Trade Organization halved its growth forecast for global goods trade this year, saying that persistent inflation, higher interest rates, a strained Chinese property market and the war in Ukraine had cast a shadow over its outlook. The Geneva-based trade body said on Thursday merchandise trade volumes would increase by just 0.8% in 2023, compared with its April estimate of 1.7%. For 2024, it said goods trade growth would pick up to 3.3%, a forecast virtually unchanged from its April estimate of 3.2%.
