Houston Astros fans watch the 2022 World Series Championship Parade Monday, Nov. 7, 2022, in downtown Houston.,” Houston Chronicle, Sunday:Maybe the five 2017 series members still here will send this year’s winnings to a charity to make up for soiling America’s game. But don’t hold your breath for, at least, a “mea culpa” from the “chapuceros.”Environment America ranked Texas first among U.S. states for toxic discharges into streams, rivers and lakes.

Then there is the No. 1 for the state with the most people without health insurance. The Texas government refuses to expand Medicaid, even though the federal government will pay 90 percent. Texas also has billions in surplus, so why not help people get health insurance?I was in Home Depot recently to buy paint with my grandson. Bought a few items, but help was near impossible.

We then went to a small paint store in town and bought what we needed and will return to buy more paint, etc. Did I pay more? Probably, but I’m done roaming cavernous stores begging for assistance to spend a lot of money. Home Depot should pay attention to the demise of shopping centers and the big-name stores that anchored them. The playground rant of being too big for your britches comes to mind.As I was writing a lesson for my ESOL students this morning, I included my recollection of three U.S. Nobel Peace Prize winners: Barack Obama, Martin Luther King Jr. and Theodore Roosevelt. I knew that list was far from complete, so I looked online to find 18 more.

Hollywood loves to sell films with characters who exceed factual humans in strength, intelligence and superpowers. Instead of those “heroes,” we should revere and emulate actual women and men who have worked for many years to make our world less hungry, less frightening and less perilous. The Nobel Peace Prize — you can look it up.
