A reader has concerns about the push for casinos in Texas.Recent advertisements are touting that Texans need to contact their lawmakers to allow a vote on expanding casino gambling in Texas. It’s being sold as a way to add jobs and money to the economy, and help pay for schools and other services.
How much does anyone want to bet that once here, those same casinos said to help fund schools will receive Chapter 313-like property and business tax exemptions that eventually raise residential property taxes?The state will collect the windfall, not us, and still be stingy in allocation to school funding. Just another way for Gov. Greg Abbott and his allies to pull another financial con over Texans.
McManus owes us, the public, an explanation on how our safety and well-being were safeguarded by his decision not to hold one of his officers accountable for misconduct.At a time when trust and legitimacy are on the line for police everywhere, it is embarrassingly obvious that McManus is tone-deaf when it comes to misconduct. Accountability is also about creating a sense of fairness within the SAPD. Consistent application of workplace rules in an organization helps create a positive environment.
If City Council and the city manager do not demand a serious look into this situation, the city and the Police Department will have failed in prioritizing transparency and “zero tolerance” as they publicly and often proclaim.
