The Texas Republican Party’s executive committee has censured U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzales for voting “the wrong way” on issues of which it disapproves.
This raises a fundamental question central to the functioning of a representative democracy. Is Gonzales beholden to the 64 members of the party’s committee, or to the constituents who elected him to office?U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzales voted his conscience on several recent actions. For this, he was censured by the Republican Party.
It is appropriate to disagree. It is healthy to challenge each others’ thinking. We must reverse this tribalist mentality and support the votes that demonstrate honesty and thought. I may not agree with Gonzales on issues, but I support his responsible decision to vote for what he believes is right.
