Calgary sun Letters to the Editor for September 13, 2023
I read with interest until the second last paragraph that began with “That said”. If the point was that high interest rates are fuelling Canada’s housing crisis, why did I have to read all that came before “that said”.
A few more reasons other than high interest rates are at play with regards to the housing crisis in Canada. A shortage of housing caused by city codes, land use bylaws, and permits. The fee charged to obtain a permit is used by municipalities as another revenue stream. Removing the GST off the final sale of the house would be helpful, but the GST is charged on material all through the construction of a house.
