Scientists are attempting to bring the dodo bird, or a semblance of it, back from extinction.
Education is not a quid pro quo but a public good, and that is why it is funded via tax dollars. We all benefit, whether or not we personally send children to the school. Our taxes also pay to repair roads we don’t personally drive on and for EMS techs who will never have to save our life. That’s how public goods work.
Hot spot policing is kind of like whack-a-mole. You suppress crime in one area, and it pops up in another. Over the years, we have seen reports or studies by nonprofits, city committees, commissions, task forces and others addressing systemic problems such as crime, domestic violence, child and family issues, health and environment, housing, education and poverty. They are respectfully filed away, or the systemic changes recommended are ignored or “recalibrated,” taking the meat out of the work of so many people. As San Antonio grows, the challenges will also grow.
