East Bay Times Letters to the Editor for Nov. 27, 2022
Great article. Congratulations to the Friends of the Library. But I beg to differ with Robert Goldner’s statement that “libraries have become something more than just books and being quiet.”
I show in “Part of Our Lives: A People’s History of the American Public Library” that they have always been much more than that, which historically helps explain why communities have held them so dear over the generations. I’ll even bet the library has a copy.
While I am grateful this issue is being addressed at this time, I do believe these actions are long overdue. Mental illness and substance abuse among students has been a concerning issue since before the start of COVID-19. Now, with reports that mental illness has doubled since the pandemic, we all must recognize the importance of taking care of our students both mentally and physically.
As a society, we have yet to find out the true long-term social ramifications that will be affecting the psyches of our growing students, and I believe that we must be prepared to face this issue head-on before suicide and substance-abuse rates skyrocket to a point we cannot return from.When Saudi Arabia assisted Russia with funding its Ukraine War by pushing up oil revenues and cutting oil production, President Biden promised to reevaluate the U.S.-Saudi relationship. That was over a month ago.
Saudi Arabia is Russia’s ally. Both countries are committing atrocious war crimes: killing, destroying, causing untold suffering.
