How safe are Halifax's bridges? | SaltWire #halifax #harbour #safety #newstodayThe above article gave me pause to reflect on the role the media has played in the characterization of the proposed Never Forgotten National Memorial in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park as a war memorial or a war monument. The NFNM is a veterans’ memorial and an homage to the 114,000 Canadians who sacrificed their lives on behalf of this nation in various conflicts during the past 110 years.
When then Egyptian president Gamal Nasser nationalized the Suez Canal in 1956, the world was threatened with another major war. Lester Pearson, Canadian ambassador to the United Nations and later our prime minister, proposed that a UN peacekeeping force could soothe the threat of war. He was honoured with the Nobel Prize for his efforts.
There are two elements that are required in peacekeeping: boots on the ground and diplomacy. The two ambassadors for the NFNM, Major General Lewis MacKenzie, and Colonel Alain Pellerin , both have more than 30-years of service in the Canadian Armed Forces. Maj Gen MacKenzie as Canada’s peacekeeper represented the ‘boots on the ground’ while Colonel Pellerin was the behind-the-scenes diplomat.
In addition, Dr. Don Julien, director emeritus of the Mainland Mi’Kmaq Confederacy, is a patron of the NFNM as he had one deployment as a peacekeeper in Cyprus. These men have spent their careers as peacekeepers and humanitarians. The NFNM has never been a war memorial. I will enlighten you on the features of the Procession Pathway at Green Cove, site of the proposed memorial. The pathway is a cantilevered steel construction which will stretch from the current parking lot towards the middle of Green Cove Head. Crossing the Procession Pathway, visitors will see the phrases from ‘The Path to War’ engraved into the seven sentry columns.
