Letter from Mumbai: VogueIndia editor-in-chief Priya Tanna on finding hope during the global health crisis
India office was more than a month back. For me, this address in the leafy business district of Ballard Estate in South Mumbai has been my second home for more than 13 years. I did not purposefully swing open the main door and head to my cabin as I do every day. Instead, I stood still as a thermal scanner was pointed at me to ensure my temperature was in control and the work environment around us safe.
Outside my window in Mumbai, a city often showered with epithets like “non-stop” and “24/7”—and globally slandered for its dreadful traffic—is a place that looks eerie and quiet, almost like a ghost town. It’s also a city that has been through a lot—terror attacks, floods, communal riots—but Mumbai’s spirit and resilience have helped it bounce back from any crisis, natural or man-made.
Now we continue to work as usual, but differently. A fresh vocabulary has ushered in this stay-at-home world: Our phone-wallet-keys arsenal is now replaced by gloves, masks and hand sanitizer. Our everyday conversations are now peppered with words such as “social distancing” and “self-quarantine.”On the coronavirus timeline, prompt action is showing promise of delivering both precaution and care.
As a fashion insider, these difficult times expose me to some terrifying realities. I’m aware of the hardships that the fashion industry faces as stores remain shut and small businesses struggle to stay afloat. Among those affected by the nationwide lockdown have been the weavers and craftsmen, the backbone of our industry. As orders get cancelled and production comes to a halt, I can only see the silver living through my designer friends who have now come together to support them.
