Verlina Reynolds-Jackson stood on her front porch in Trenton excitedly waving at an Audi parked across the street. She could see the nurse who had arrived to administer an IV treatment she desperately needed and wanted her to know that she was in the right location.Fifteen minutes later, Reynolds-Jackson got a call from the health care company. They told her that the nurse, who is white, was afraid to cross the street because there were landscapers in her patient’s yard.
“We take this very seriously and we do not tolerate behaviors that are biased or discriminate against individuals based on ethnicity, religion, race, sex or sexual orientation,” Amerita President Richard Iriye told NJ.com recently. “Such behaviors are addressed and disciplinary action is taken.” The incident earlier this month started out as a promising solution for a vexing disease. The assemblywoman haswhich can be painful, debilitating and sometimes life-threatening. After a flare-up, she had the opportunity to have her two-hour infusion at home instead of at the hospital. The ability to spend that time in the comfort of her home was a welcome change.
After receiving a call from MediFusion regarding the nurse not feeling comfortable about getting out of her car, they rescheduled the appointment with another nurse for that afternoon at 2 p.m. She started writing letters. She sent a letter to the president of Amerita Inc./dba Nextron Infusion Services/PharMerica and MediFusion. She said everybody learned about the experience she had that day.
