Roberts’ big game against Texas was reportedly the first time a Black player had played in a game against white players in Texas. The University of Texas reportedly did not want Roberts to play in the contest, but his teammates refused to play unless he was also allowed to play. The 6-foot-3, 202 pounder was a native of Oceanside, California.

He was taken in the 14th-round, 166th-overall, of the 1958 draft by the New York Giants. But, instead of heading to New York, Roberts spent a year in the Canadian Football League with the Toronto Argonauts. He reportedly tried out for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1959 but did not make the team. He was then signed by the San Francisco 49ers and played for them from 1959 through 1962.
